style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and protecting an electrical power system.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> As the modern power system deals with huge currents, <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">special attention should be given during designing of a circuit breaker to ensure it is able to safely <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">interrupt the arc produced during the closing of a circuit breaker.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This was the basic definition of circuit breaker.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Introduction to Circuit Breaker<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The modern power system deals with huge power network and huge numbers of associated electrical equipment. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During a short circuit fault or any other type of electrical fault (such as electric cable faults),<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a high fault current will flow through this equipment as well as the power network itself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This high current may damage the equipment and networks permanently.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For saving these pieces of equipment and the power networks,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the fault current should be cleared from the system as quickly as possible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Again after the fault is removed,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the system must come to its normal working condition as soon<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as possible for supplying reliable quality power to the receiving ends. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to that for proper controlling of the power system,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> different switching operations are required to be performed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So for timely disconnecting and reconnecting different parts of power system network for protection and control, <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">there must be some special type of switching devices which can be operated safely under huge current carrying condition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the interruption of large current,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> there would be large arcing in between switching contacts,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> so care should be taken to quench these arcs in circuit breaker in a safe manner.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The <\/span><b>circuit breaker<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the special device which does all the required switching operations during current carrying condition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This was the basic <\/span><b>introduction to circuit breaker<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Working Principle of Circuit Breaker<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The circuit breaker mainly consists of fixed contacts and moving contacts. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In normal \u201cON\u201d condition of the circuit breaker,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> these two contacts are physically connected to each other due to applied mechanical pressure on the moving contacts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> There is an arrangement stored potential energy in the <\/span><b>operating mechanism of circuit breaker<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which is released if the switching signal is given to the breaker.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The potential energy can be stored in the circuit breaker by different ways like by deforming metal spring,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by compressed air, or by hydraulic pressure. But whatever the source of potential energy,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it must be released during operation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The release of potential energy makes the sliding of the moving contact in a speedy manner.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-52843\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gahzly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/5f4f69214c652_20200902151257-MebapowermccbMTmax-160A-4P.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" title=\"l\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gahzly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/5f4f69214c652_20200902151257-MebapowermccbMTmax-160A-4P.png 500w, https:\/\/gahzly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/5f4f69214c652_20200902151257-MebapowermccbMTmax-160A-4P-400x400.png 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/>All circuit breaker have operating coils (tripping coils and close coil), <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">whenever these coils are energized by switching pulse,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the plunger inside them displaced. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This operating coil plunger is typically attached to the <\/span><b>operating mechanism of circuit breaker<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as a result the mechanically stored potential energy in the breaker mechanism is released in forms of kinetic energy,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which makes the moving contact to move as these moving contacts mechanically<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> attached through a gear lever arrangement with the operating mechanism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After a cycle of <\/span><b>operation of circuit breaker<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the total stored energy is released <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and hence the potential energy again stored in the operating mechanism of the circuit breaker <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">using spring charging motor or air compressor or by any other means.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Till now we have discussed mechanical <\/span><b>working principle of circuit breaker<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> But there are electrical characteristics of a circuit breaker which also should be considered in <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this discussion of the operation of the circuit breaker.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Let\u2019s have a discussion on electrical <\/span><b>principle of circuit breaker<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The circuit breaker has to carry large rated or fault power.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Due to this large power, there is always dangerously high arcing between moving contacts <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and fixed contact during operation of the circuit breaker. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Again as we discussed earlier the arc in circuit breaker can be quenching safely<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if the dielectric strength between the current carrying contacts of circuit breaker <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increases rapidly during every current zero crossing of the alternating current.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The dielectric strength of the media in between contacts can be increased in numbers of ways, <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">like by compressing the ionized arcing media since compressing accelerates the deionization process of the media,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by cooling the arcing media since cooling increase the resistance of arcing path or by replacing the ionized <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">arcing media with fresh gasses. Hence some arc quenching processes should be involved in the operation of the circuit breaker.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although circuit breakers perform their function independently and without supervision,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> there are also remote control circuit breakers which can be operated on demand at a
