Electric cars are no longer a dream. They are here today, and over the next few years there are due to be many more models and options available to the consumer. With fuel prices climbing ever higher, and the environmental impact traditional fossil fuel burning brings, you may be considering making the switch to an alternative. Here are 5 reasons why you should drive an electric vehicle.

1. Cheaper:

They are much cheaper to run. Taking much less cash to ‘fill up’ than oil burning engines. You can charge them overnight from your domestic electricity supply, and depending on your utility company this can be reduced by taking advantage of off-peak tariffs. Your motoring costs will be slashed.

2. Cleaner:

They are truly zero emission vehicles. No tailpipe, and no greenhouse gasses are produced. Plus they are quiet, all of which leads to a very low environmental impact. Whilst it is true that there are emissions associated with electricity production, this is getting cleaner all the time. Also many suppliers offer green energy tariffs, these are more expensive but still a lot less than diesel or gasoline.

3. Lower maintenance:

Electric motors are almost maintenance free. There is no cooling system, and no oil system, plus no gearbox or clutch. Oil and coolant changes are a thing of the past. The only thing to look after are brakes and lyres. If you are a DIY motorist working on one of these vehicles is cleaner too. You wont be covered in oil or grease like with a traditional fuel burner.

4. Lasts Longer:

As well as being ultra reliable the motor will last a very long time. With less moving parts to worry about there is little that can go wrong. All there is in an electric motor is a coil and drive-shaft, as opposed to the hundreds of moving parts in a traditional combustion engine.

5. Local Incentives:

It is possible that your taxes will be lower, as many countries will give you tax breaks and other incentives for green motoring. In the UK where other cars have to pay road tax annually, the tax for electrically propelled vehicles is zero.

I am sure that these 5 reasons you should drive an electric vehicle have given you food or thought. These cars are becoming better and cheaper all the time. Not only will you be helping the environment you will be helping your bank balance too.
