Electric timer
Electric timer
The function of the electric timer. The electric timer is one of the basic components that we cannot do without in some electrical circuits, such as: electrical control circuits, and circuits that need an operating delay system, such as electrical generators.
There are many important uses of the timer in various electrical circuits, so let us learn what the function of the electrical timer is, what it consists of, and what areas of its use.
Installing an electric timer
The internal electrical timer consists as simple as possible on an electronic board that contains a capacitor, resistors, and some electronic parts whose task is to delay operation, and an electrical relay whose task is to connect and disconnect its contact points based on the operation of the circuit.
It consists of an indicator on the outside through which the delay rate is adjusted in seconds, minutes, or hours, depending on the timer you have. It also contains three connection points as follows:
- Open point: It is symbolized by the letters (NO) and is an abbreviation for (Normal Open).
- Closed Point: It is symbolized by the letters (NC) and is an abbreviation for (Normal Close).
Important note: There are timers that differ in terms of internal structure depending on the type and the principle of its operation, but the most famous type that we will explain about are the electric timers that contain an electronic panel inside because they are the most commonly used.
Electric timer function
When the on-delay timer is fed with an alternating voltage source, the timer will delay the change of its contacts from the closed point to the open point according to the pre-set period, then it will give an electrical current signal to another circuit, or operate an electrical load.
There is also another timer of the type (Off-Delay) whose operating principle differs from the timer (On-Delay), as it is based on delaying the disconnection of the electrical current from the control circuit or the electrical load, and the value of the disconnection delay is adjusted by calibrating the indicator according to the duration you want.
There is a Programmable Timer whose function is to control the connection and disconnection of the electrical circuit during a specific period on a specific day every week, month, or year. It is used to operate diesel machines for generating units in addition to ATS circuits.
Areas of use of the timer
The timer is used in many different applications, the most important of which are:
- Electrical control circuits.
- Home refrigerator protection.
- Operating the electrical load at specific times during the day or month.
- Star delta circles.
- Reverse the direction of rotation of the electric motor.
- It is used in electrical distribution panels.
- The submersible runs for a specific period of time, depending on the number of hours it has set, and then it turns off.
- Operating the household water pump.
