Fluorescent lamps
Types of fluorescent lamps: Types of fluorescent lamps are among the most important lamps used to illuminate indoor spaces to give adequate light.
Types of fluorescent lamps are used in schools, public institutions, mosques and homes to illuminate indoor spaces.
Follow this article with us to learn about the most popular types of fluorescent lamps.
Types of fluorescent lamps
- Fluorescent tube lamp.
- Compact fluorescent lamp.
Fluorescent tube lamp
It is one of the types of fluorescent lamps. It is classified as a low-pressure electric discharge lamp. Its method of operation depends on the principle of mercury vapor gas present between the electrodes of the fluorescent lamp.
Components of a fluorescent tube lamp
- Glass tube.
- Two electrodes, each containing a filament made of metal wire.
- A small amount of argon gas to start the electric arc.
- A drop of mercury vapor.
- Stifling coil.
- Ignition starter.
The theory of operation of tube lamps
- When there is a potential difference between the two ends of the lamp, argon gas ignites the electric arc.
- After the ignition process, the mercury vapor evaporates, so the inside of the lamp becomes filled with mercury vapor in which the electric arc continues.
- The choke coil limits the current passing through the lamp.
- The function of the ignition starter is to quickly ignite the electric arc between the two electrodes of the lamp in the mercury vapor gas.
Uses of fluorescent tube lamps
It is used in many places, the most famous of which is lighting schools, public institutions, parking lots, homes, industrial workshops, and public corridors.
Advantages of fluorescent tube lamps
- Color discrimination degree: 89%.
- Color temperatures range from 2700k to 8000k.
- Lamp efficiency up to 95%.
- Lamp life is up to 20,000 hours.
- The tube shape of the lamp helps spread the light evenly.
- Cheap.
- Possibility of dimming the lamp using dedicated ballasts.
- Energy saving compared with halogen lamp.
Disadvantages of fluorescent tube lamps
- Not suitable for concentrated lighting.
- It cannot be used to show the shine of jewelry and metal objects.
- Not ideal for showing warm colors.
- Not energy efficient compared to LED lights.
- The size of the lamp is large compared to other lamps.
- High maintenance rate.
- Contains toxic mercury.
Compact fluorescent lamps
Characteristics of compact fluorescent lamps:
- It is classified as one of the types of fluorescent lamps.
- Its working theory is the same as that of a tube lamp.
- It does not depend on a starter and throttle.
- It is available in several different shapes, such as one tube, two tubes, three tubes, or in a spiral shape.
Advantages of compact fluorescent lamps
- Lamp efficiency reaches 77%.
- The degree of color discrimination reaches 82%.
- Does not produce high heat like halogen lamps.
- Cheap.
- Small size compared to tubular fluorescent lamps.
- Long life up to 13000 hours.
Disadvantages of compact fluorescent lamps
- Not suitable for concentrated lighting.
- Not suitable for showing the luster of jewelry.
- Not suitable for showing warm colors.
- Large size compared to metal halide lamps.
