But first, we must know what a timer is and what it is used for in general?

The timer is one of the most important tools used in the field of electrical control, as it automatically connects a circuit after a specified period of time, to operate a load or to deliver electrical current to the contactor coil. It is widely used in control circuits, for the purpose of protecting the components of the internal panel.

The contactor is the heart of electrical control circuits, so you cannot design an electrical control circuit without the contactor

The contactor  works mainly on the magnetic effect of the electric current, so that it uses a coil through which an electric current passes, generating a magnetic field that works to attract an iron core to which the terminals of the power circuit are connected. The contactor is mainly used in operating devices and equipment that are characterized by a high voltage difference as well as a large current when operating, such as factory machines. Air conditioning equipment, lighting and heating circuits, etc

The contactor is  one of the most important elements of automatic control, and it is very important. It is a box that contains contacts, that is, switches. Some of these contacts are used in the power circuit to deliver a high current, and some are designated for contacting the control circuit through which a small current passes.

Internal timer components

  1. Timer supply source:  It contains different voltages depending on its manufacturer, such as 220V/AC or 120VA, and so on.
  2. Electronic panel:  Its function is to control the specified time delay.
  3. Relay:  Its function is to signal from the electronic panel when the time delay period ends, and accordingly, the current reaches the relay coil, and then the relay contact points are changed.
  4. Indicator to control the time delay period.

Timer contact points

  1. “Normally Closed” NC contact points:  In their normal state, the contact points are closed and open when the specified delay period ends. They can be used by placing an indicator light to know the change of the contact points from NC to NO.
  2. “Normally Open” contact points:  The points are in their normal state open and closed when the specified delay period expires.
  3. Common point:  It is the common point, where it is directly connected to the electrical current.

Types of timer

  • In terms of internal composition:
    • Motorized timer.
    • Electronic timer.
    • Pneumatic timer.
  • In terms of working principle:
    • Timer with “On Delay” system.
    • Timer with “Off Delay” system.
    • Flasher Timer.

Motorized timer

Its principle depends on a small internal motor that drives a group of subsidiary gears with a main gear. This gear has a protruding part that is changed by changing the rotation axis for adjusting the timing. As a result, the protruding part may approach or move away from the point of contact.

Electronic timer

Designing a circuit that contains electronic parts with a small relay. Timing is controlled through an electronic element called a variable resistance. This type of timer contains multiple capabilities to perform functions.

Pneumatic timer

It consists of a spiral bulge with a winding whose aperture value is changed by a grading wheel with which the required timing is set.

When it is turned on, the spiral bulge is attracted and air begins to enter through the blister opening until it is filled and rises until its contact points are changed.

This type is characterized by the fact that it does not require a power source because it does not contain a coil or internal motor.

Timer with “On Delay” system

When connected to the electrical current, the timer starts counting down until it reaches the specified time, and accordingly, the timer contacts change.

Timer with “Off Delay” system

When it is connected to the electrical current, the timer works, and then begins the count that was specified. When the count is finished, the timer’s contact points change. When the power is disconnected at any moment, it starts counting from the beginning.

Flasher Timer

When the timer is connected to the electrical current, it begins to count according to the specified value, and after completing the counting, the contact points are changed while the counting continues to return to the normal state again, and so on until the electrical current is disconnected from it.

An example of this is refrigerator timers, clock timers… etc.

Therefore, the timer is used to control the time of electrical appliances, lighting, heating, capacitors, etc.

It is used to control electric motors, lighting, heating, capacitors, etc.

We must know what relays are, their function, and the most important types used  ?

Relays are nothing but protective devices through which electrical circuits can be opened or closed, or they work mechanically to control the circuit breaker when the quantities designed for them change, such as the values of current, voltage, and power.

Functionality of relays

The function of electrical relays is limited to the following:

  • It gives a signal to operate the circuit breaker, and the latter disconnects the part in which the malfunction occurred from the network.
  • It provides sufficient discrimination of the type of malfunction occurring.
  • It identifies the part or area where the error occurred, which facilitates the repair process.

Division of relays:

Electrical relays can be divided in several ways, as follows:

  • As for contact oil, there are two types:
  • Relays work to lock the contact points.
  • Regarding the type of electrical quantity affecting it, it is divided into relays: current, voltage, power, resistance, etc.
  • Regarding the direction of change, the relays are divided into large-end relays and small-end relays.

High end relays are known as relays that operate when the value acting on them exceeds the value they are designed for, such as surge relays that operate when the value affecting them exceeds the value the relay is designed for. Among these types there are voltage increase relays and surge relays. Current and power-increasing relay.

As for the small terminal relays, they operate when the value reaches a value. They operate when the value affecting them reaches a value less than that for which the relay is designed, such as voltage drop relays that operate when the voltage value is less than a certain value. Among these types there are voltage drop relays and current drop relays. And power drop relays.

Regarding the effect of the relay on the circuit breaker: the relays are divided into direct effect relays and indirect effect relays.

In direct effect relays, the measuring element is connected mechanically to operate the circuit breaker, and indirect effect relays, in which the measuring element is connected to an auxiliary power source to control the circuit breaker.

  • Regarding the installation of the relay: Relays are divided into the following types:
  • Solendoid type relay.
  • Attracted armature type relay.
  • Electrodynamic type relay.
  • Moving coil type relay.
  • Induction type relay.
  • Regarding the function of the relay, the relays are divided into:
  • Relays for voltage, current or power drop.
  • Relays to increase voltage, current or power.
  • Directional relays operate when the direction of current or power is reversed.
  • Thermal relays.
  • Differential relays.
  • Distance relays.
  • Regarding their operating time: the relays are divided into:
  • Instantaneous relays, where there is no wasted time between the moment the relay turns on and the moment the circuit breaker contacts turn on.
  • Relays have a definite time effect, as there is a specific period of time between the moment the relay turns on and the moment the circuit breaker turns on.
  • Relays have an inverse time delay. In this type, the specific time period between the moment the relay is turned on and the moment the circuit breaker contacts are turned on is inversely proportional to the peak of the fault current or any other value that causes the relay to turn on.

Types of relays

Electromagnetic relay

There are three types of electromagnetic relays: the solenoid type, the hinged type, and the rotating type.

the use :

Electromagnetic relays are used to protect electrical circuits against short circuits.

Thermal relay:

the use :

The thermal relay is used to protect circuits, especially motor circuits, against overload. It is known commercially as overload. It is characterized by having a time delay because the expansion of the two metals takes some time until the clutch can be disengaged. This prevents the motor circuit from being opened when a large starting current passes, which continues for a period of time. It takes a short period of time, but it protects the engine if there is an increase in load for a long period.

Thermistor relay

the use  :

Thermistor protection methods are used in the following cases:

  • Engines with a capacity higher than 2 kilowatts.
  • Engines that start motion under difficult conditions.
  • Engines that operate irregularly.
  • Engines used in heavy work.
  • Three-phase motors subject to operation on one side.
  • In protecting transformers against overload.
  • In monitoring the temperature of any device.

In the case of high-power engines of the following types:

DC motors – inductive motors of both types use thermistor protection in addition to load jumper relays in order to give complete thermal protection.

Advantages of thermistor protection:

  • It works very precisely.
  • It can be installed easily and quickly.
  • Suitable for protecting engines against explosions.
  • It protects the motors against interruption in any of the three phases.
  • It has a test switch between manual or automatic operation.

Deductive relay

the use :

This type is used to protect variable current circuits against overcurrent. It is considered one of the most widely used types of relays due to the great diversity in their timing characteristics. The operating time of the relay can be controlled by controlling the distance that the disk moves or by changing the number of turns of the relay magnet coil.

  • Dynamometer relay.
  • Differential or differential relay.
  • Relay to prevent earth leakage in electrical cables.
  • Low voltage circuit breaker.
  • Relay Buchholz.
  • Grounding.
  • Lightning rod .
