What is overload?

It is a protective device that disconnects the electrical current from the load or the motor as soon as the current increases beyond the permissible value. The value of the disconnecting current can be determined at the same electrical motor current using a grading indicator located on the front end of the overload.

How the overload device works

The overload consists of three thermal coils connected in series with the motor terminals. It has a designated scale to adjust the value of the overload current to the same value as the motor current. When the motor is running, it will work normally. However, when the intensity of the current drawn by the motor rises above the value set to the overload indicator, it expands. The thermal coils, as a result, alter or change the position of the auxiliary contact points as follows:

Types of overload

• A type that connects directly to the contactor, that is, it is designed to connect directly to the contactor output terminals.
• Integrated type, i.e. its main terminals (input and output) are connected via copper connecting wires.
• A special type of protection for large-capacity motors, which protects the motor using 5/100 current transformers.
• A type of electronic boards, such as boards that protect home refrigerators from surges and drops in current.

Explanation of electronic overload

Overload is considered one of the most important components of power boards because it protects the motor from burning due to a high current value that exceeds the value specified for the motor windings, for a specific reason such as a drop in voltage, a falling fuses, a sudden load, mechanical failure, or an overload on the motor.

The electronic overload consists of feeding points called A1 and A2, with a voltage of 220 volts AC, and there is an indicator to determine the value of the motor current.

The contactor  works mainly on the magnetic effect of the electric current, so that it uses a coil through which an electric current passes, generating a magnetic field that works to attract an iron core to which the terminals of the power circuit are connected. The contactor is mainly used in operating devices and equipment that are characterized by a high voltage difference as well as a large current when operating, such as factory machines. Air conditioning equipment, lighting and heating circuits, etc

The contactor is  one of the most important elements of automatic control, and it is very important. It is a box that contains contacts, that is, switches. Some of these contacts are used in the power circuit to deliver a high current, and some are designated for contacting the control circuit through which a small current passes.

The contactor consists of two pieces of iron, one fixed and the other moving. A coil is wrapped around the fixed piece. If electricity is connected to this coil, it will turn the fixed piece of iron into a magnet that attracts the moving piece. Communication is established between the two pieces, meaning the contactor keys are closed. Disconnecting the current from the coil, the contactor returns to its original position via a “spring” or otherwise known as a “spring” or “bucket” that pushes the moving piece upward again.

Therefore, it is an automatic switch through which we control the disconnection and delivery of voltage to the loads that operate at high 3-phase voltages, such as controlling the operation of pumps, high-load machines, air conditioning devices, and motors.
