But first, we must know what the timer is ( the electric timer) and what is it used in general?

The timer is one of the most important tools used in the field of electrical control, as it automatically connects a circuit after a specified period of time, to operate a load or to deliver electric current to a contactor coil. It is frequently used in control circuits, for the purpose of protecting the components of the inner drum.

The contactor is the heart of the electrical control circuits, so you cannot design an electrical control circuit without the presence of the contactor

The contactor  mainly works on the magnetic effect of the electric current, so that it uses a coil through which an electric current passes, and it generates a magnetic field that works to attract an iron core, which is connected to the ends of the power circuit. Air conditioning, lighting and heating circuits, etc

The contactor  is one of the most important elements of automatic control, rather it is very important. It is a box containing contacts, i.e. switches. These contactors are used in the power circuit to connect a high current, and some are intended to connect to the control circuit through which a small current passes.

Components of the internal timer

  1. Timer feed source:  contains different voltages according to its manufacturer such as 220V/AC or 120VA and so on.
  2. Electronic board:  Its function is to control the specified time delay.
  3. Relay:  Its function is one of the signals from the electronic board at the end of the time delay period, and accordingly the current reaches the relay coil, then the contact points of the relay are changed.
  4. Indicator to control the time delay period.

Timer contact points

  1. “Normally Closed” NC:  The points are in their normal state closed and open when the specified delay period ends. It can be used by placing a signal lamp to know the change of contact points from NC to NO.
  2. “Normally Open” NO:  The points are in their normal state open and closed when the specified delay period ends.
  3. Common point:  It is the common point, as it is directly connected to the electric current.

Types of timer

  • In terms of internal installation:
    • Motorized timer.
    • Electronic timer.
    • Air timer.
  • In terms of working principle:
    • Timer with “On Delay” system.
    • Timer with “Off Delay” system.
    • Flasher Timer.

Motorized timer

Its principle is based on a small internal motor that drives a group of sub-gears by means of a main gear. This gear has a protruding part that is changed by changing the axis of rotation of the timing, as a result of which the protruding part may approach or move away from the point of contact.

Electronic timer

Designing a circuit that contains electronic parts with a relay of small size. Timing is controlled through an electronic element called variable resistance. This type of timer contains multiple capabilities to perform functions.

Air timer

It consists of a spiral bulge with a coil whose opening value changes by means of a grading roller with which the required timing is set.

When it is turned on, the spiral bulge is attracted and air begins to enter through the bulge opening until it is filled and rises to the top until its contact points are changed.

This type is characterized by the fact that it does not need a power source because it does not contain an internal file or drive.

Timer with “On Delay” system

When connected to the mains, the timer counts down until it reaches the specified time, and accordingly the timer contact points change.

Timer with “Off Delay” system

When it is connected to the electric current, the timer starts, and after that the counting that has been set begins, and when the counting is completed, the timer contact points change, and when the current is disconnected at any moment, it works on the counting from the beginning.

Flasher Timer

When the timer is connected to the electric current, it starts counting according to the specified value, and after completing the counting, the contact points change as the counting continues to return to the normal state again, and so on until the electric current is disconnected from it.

An example of this is refrigerator timers, clock timers…. etc.

Therefore, the timer is used in the time control of electrical appliances, lighting, heating, capacitors, and others.
