What are fuses and what are they used for?
- They are safety devices that are used to protect home appliances such as televisions, refrigerators, and computers that have been damaged by high voltage.
- A fuse is made of a thin strip or strand of metal, whenever there is a large amount of current or excessive current flowing in an electrical circuit, the fuse melts, opening the circuit and disconnecting it from the power source.
- It also acts as a circuit breaker, a current charger, or a stabilizer that protects the device from damage. Many types, features, and design of fuses are available in the market.
- Their strips consist of aluminium, copper and zinc and are always connected in series with the circuit to protect against surges in the running cables.
Why do we need a fuse?
Fuses are used to prevent household appliances from short circuiting and damage caused by overload or high current and so on.
If we do not use fuses, electrical faults occur in the wires and lead to the burning of wires and electrical appliances and may lead to a house fire.
It may also endanger the lives of televisions, computers, radios, and other household appliances.
When the fuse blows, a sudden spark occurs which may turn your house into sudden darkness by disconnecting the power supply which saves more mishaps.
This is why we need fuses in general to protect our home appliances from harm.
How does Fuse work?
- It works on the principle of heating effect of current.
- It consists of a thin strip or strand of metallic wire with a non-combustible substance.
- This is connected between the ends of the terminals.
- The fuse is always connected in series with the electrical circuit.
When excess current or heat is generated due to heavy current flows in the circuit, the fuse melts due to the low melting point of the element and opens the circuit.
Excessive flow may cause the wire to collapse and stop the flow of current.
The fuse can be replaced or replaced with a new fuse with appropriate ratings.
The smelter can consist of an element such as zinc, copper, silver, or aluminum.
It also acts as a circuit breaker used to break the circuit when a sudden fault occurs in the circuit.
This is not only protective but also used as a safety measure to prevent humans from dangers.
So, this is how the fuse works.
Features :
- Excellent accessibility, stable performance, practical and convenient
- It is widely used in many mechanical mechanisms to monitor the position of moving parts of machines and plants.
- It can also be used in circuits, control circuit and auxiliary circuit for terminal limit protection.
Advantages :
- It is resistant to bad environmental factors and pollution, so it is easy to use in factories, machines, and homes as well
- It is not affected by the surrounding magnetic fields
Applications : –
- They are safety devices that are used to protect home appliances such as televisions, refrigerators, and computers that have been damaged by high voltage.
- It is used in factories and other important places
