Automatic Voltage Regulator

What is Automatic Voltage Regulator?

Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR) is a device used in generators with the objective of regulating voltage automatically, which means it will convert fluctuating voltage levels into constant voltage levels.

Automatic Voltage Regulators (AVRs) work by stabilizing the output voltage of generators at variable loads, but they can also divide the reactive load between generators running in parallel (voltage drop), and help the generator respond to overloads.

As simple as possible – Automatic Voltage Regulators (AVRs) continuously take variable voltage ranges for input and maintain a constant output at a constant voltage.

Why are Automatic Voltage Regulators (AVR) important for generators?

Unregulated generators, which are generators without an Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR), are generally unable to adequately meet the power needs and requirements of each piece of equipment or appliance connected to the generator. This is because some unregulated generators are not able to control or regulate the voltage, so the terminal voltage will always continue to decrease as the load requirements continue to increase.

If the generator voltage is not maintained at a constant and constant rate, the overall performance of the generator may be adversely affected and any facilities, equipment or machinery operated by the generator may be adversely affected by the unregulated generator.

Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR) is directly related to the performance and longevity of your generator, as well as the elements the generator provides the power and ensures that the voltage output delivered will be consistent at load current even if background fluctuations occur.

This helps in mitigating and even eliminating damages that can be caused by any fluctuations to devices, machines, devices and equipment.

What are the functions of an Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR)?

The most important function of Automatic Voltage Regulators (AVRs) is to automatically control the generator voltage and keep the output constant at the appropriate voltage level range for your generator regardless of the current being drawn by the load.

Not only do AVRs help adjust voltages to safe levels, but they can also provide protection against electrical surges, surges, and generator overloads.

Automatic Voltage Regulators (AVRs) also help the generator respond to and handle overloads to prevent shorting, and they can also divide the reactive load between generators operating in parallel.

Briefly about it:

  • Automatic voltage regulator
  • An automatic voltage regulator is used to regulate the voltage.
  • It takes the fluctuating voltage and converts it into a constant voltage.
  • The fluctuation in voltage is mainly caused by the different load on the supply system.
  • Voltage variation damages power system equipment.
  • Variation in voltage can be controlled by installing voltage control equipment at several places such as near transformers, generators, feeders etc. Voltage regulator is provided at more than one point in the power system to control voltage variations.
  • Automatic Voltage RegulatorIn a DC supply system, the voltage can be controlled using compound generators in the case of feeders of equal lengths, but in the case of feeders of different lengths, the voltage at the end of each feeder is kept constant using a feed booster.
  • In an AC system, the voltage can be controlled using various methods such as step-up transformers, inductance regulators, shunt capacitors, etc.

Working principle of a voltage regulator

  • It works on the principle of error detection.
  • The output voltage of an alternator obtained through a potential transformer and then rectified, filtered, and compared with a reference.

Voltage control automatic rate

  • Thus, the amplified fault signals control the excitation of the main or pilot inductor through a buck or boost action (i.e. it controls the voltage fluctuation).
  • Controlling the exciter output leads to the main generator terminal voltage controls.

The application of the automatic voltage regulator (its main functions) is as follows.

It controls system voltage and has machine operation close to steady state stability.
It divides the reactive load between generators operating in parallel.
Automatic Voltage Regulators reduce overvoltages that occur due to sudden loss of load on the system.
It increases system excitation under fault conditions so that there is maximum synchronization force at the time of fault removal.

Automatic Voltage Regulator

The AVR110 is a generic 10 amp half-wave phase-restricted automatic voltage regulator (AVR) that forms part of the excitation structure of a brushless generator.

In the context of alternator voltage regulation, the excitation power is derived directly from the alternator terminals.

Automatic Voltage Regulator

Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR) is a solid state electronic device to automatically maintain the generator output terminal voltage at a specified value.

  • It will attempt to do so as the generator load changes or the operating temperature changes.
  • The AVR is part of the generator excitation system.
  • Automatic Voltage Regulators maintain a constant voltage for your equipment, even when the input voltage and system load vary widely.
  • Lightning strikes, line disturbances, and uneven loads cause disrupted traverses, surges, sags, and surges.
  • Left unregulated, these conditions will deteriorate—and even destroy—sensitive broadcast electronics at receiving stations, studios, mobile production vehicles, and transmitter sites.
  • Avoid catastrophic equipment failures, software corruption, reduced power tube life, and poor signal quality with AVR voltage regulators.
